Post Masters Research Associate - Large Language Models
Summary
At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.
Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.
The Energy and Environment Directorate delivers science and technology solutions for the nation's biggest energy and environmental challenges. Our more than 1,700 staff support the Department of Energy (DOE), delivering on key DOE mission areas including: modernizing our nation's power grid to maintain a reliable, affordable, secure, and resilient electricity delivery infrastructure; research, development, validation, and effective utilization of renewable energy and efficiency technologies that improve the affordability, reliability, resiliency, and security of the American energy system; and resolving complex issues in nuclear science, energy, and environmental management.
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division, part of the Energy and Environment Directorate, is accelerating the transition to an efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.
Responsibilities
The Optimization and Control Group within the EIBD is looking for a Post-Masters RA to contribute to innovative research on developing agentic systems to address interoperability challenges in the buildings domain. The position will focus on the application of artificial intelligence, particularly large language models (LLMs), to solve interoperability challenges that significantly hinder the large-scale deployment of smart applications in buildings and other related domains. The candidate will play a key role in designing autonomous workflows that translate complex physical system data into actionable, automated decisions.
The Post-Masters RA will work with PNNL staff on design, implementation, and testing of agentic AI frameworks for residential and commercial buildings. The work will require understanding of large-language models, frontier AI, retrieval-augmented protocol, model context protocol, and experience developing multi-agent systems for large-scale deployments. The candidate is expected to implement and test frameworks in Python, and help summarize the technical findings in presentations and/or peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to bridge the gap between legacy infrastructure and next-generation control systems.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Candidates must have received a Master's degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline.
+ Demonstrated proficiency in Python programming for complex data analysis, task automation, and algorithm development.
+ Hands-on experience developing, evaluating, or deploying artificial intelligence and machine learning models, specifically generative AI and large language models (LLMs).
+ Strong understanding of agentic systems and reasoning frameworks.
+ Prior experience related to building energy systems, smart grid technologies, or smart building controls.
+ A track record of peer-reviewed publications or academic contributions in artificial intelligence or engineering applications.
